"Nigiri sushi" - Another way of saying maki is too complex

About Nigiri sushi

Nigiri sushi is a much more simple, easy to make dish than maki or tamaki(cone) sushi. it simply requires a fingerish shaped cube of vinegared rice ,and a piece of raw fish, vegetable, or tamago.

Do to my expressed preference for sea creatures, this guide will be presenting the making of salmon nigiri. But you can easily replace the salmon for a same size piece of tamago, or avocado.

How to cut the fish

The nice flash illustration bellow will demonstrate the dimensions in which you should cut the piece of fish for your nigiri sushi. As probably already know, I favor salmon, but you can also use: sea bream, tuna, and their good friends - the salty water fish.

Putting the nigiri sushi together

Now that you have sliced a few pieces of fish by the sizes shown above, it's time to decorate the rice cube.

Sorry guys, but for no there is no flash illustration for this part, you'll just have to use your imagination. The size of the rice cube should resemble the size of the fish, only a bit thicker.

How thick?

depending on your specific taste, no one will judge you for using extra rice in your nigiri - and if they do, let me have a word with them.

When Nigiri met Wassabi

In order for the fish to stick together with the rice, it is recommended to use a little but of wassabi. Take a pea size or less of wassabi, and put it between the fish and the rice just before you squeeze them together. Now take your rolling mat, put it on top of your almost-ready nigiri, and squeeze it in three directions simultaneously. Squeeze just hard enough to cling the two together, but be careful not to ruin its shape.

enjoy..
